Physical/electrical specifications
Linux System | Linux 2.4.20 | This kernel is a custom kernel patched with the latest ACPI patch (20021212), Debian testing/unstable is installed | OK |
X11 | GeForce4 440 Go 64M | work quite well with XFree driver but weird display when I switch on tty console, and poor support of acceleration, and no support of twinview, so I installed nvidia driver. Twinview works fine, TV-OUT also | OK |
Sound | i810 intel chipset | Strange, in XP, the sound chipset is reported to be a Realtek AC97 Audio, but lspci says the contrary. Anyway, the i810 module works fine. Don't forget to use aumix, the sound volume is quite low by default | OK |
USB | VIA UHCI USB | works fine with usb-uhci module, tested with an usb mouse | OK |
Network | RealTek RTL 8139 | ok with 8139too modules | OK |
Modem | HSP 56 MR-8060 | This modem is reported to work in Linux (see the pctelcomp database. Install the latest pctel driver 0.9.6 and 0.9.7 : ./configure --with-hal=i8xx, then make and make install. Then load pctel.o and ptserial.o, run minicom as root and type ATZ, ATI 3 : it must work. I can phone myself, but since I don't have an isp provider, I cannot test for internet access | TESTED |
IRDA | | | NOT TESTED |
IEEE1394 | | | NOT TESTED |
PCMCIA | | | NOT TESTED |
Hard Drive | HITACHI_DK23DA-40 | hdparm -tT /dev/hda gives : Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.45 seconds =284.44 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 3.36 seconds = 19.05 MB/sec, optimization with hdparm planned
DVD,DVD-R,DVD-RW, CD,CDR,CDRW | Toshiba DVDRom SD-R 6012 | CD and CDRW works fine, I tested the CDRW with Xcdroast with no problem. Reading DVD is now ok (with mplayer or xine + libdvdcss2, libdvdnav1, libdvdread2 and libdvdread3). I try DVD-R burning, with k3b : it works fine | OK |
Keyboard | | The keyboard is quite comfortable, but there is a little problem in top left on the keyboard (probably the place where RAM lays. | OK |
Touchpad | Synaptics | I didn't manage for the moment to use the full features offered by this kind of touchpad, but it works well in XFree and console (via gpm). More investigations later | OK |
Power Management | ACPI 2.0 Compliant | ACPI seems not to work correctly, I only have information on battery, but nothing about thermal and unable to switch in sleep mode. I'm trying APM which seems to allow suspending, but I lose battery information. APM does allow suspending only if I kill the X session. The latest nvidia driver doesn't work properly with apm support (apm is vetoed). So if you want even use suspending, you have to kill X and then remove nvidia module before "apm --suspending". If you want wake up your laptop, hit the power button. New Now apm works by applying the following changes : "apm=on acpi=off" for the kernel, loading apm module, and hacking nv.c from nvidia | OK |
Fan | | Fan is quite noisy, and it's very boring (fan starts all 10-15 minutes). This observation about the fan concerns specifically the case where you connect your laptop to an external screen : the video card seems to heat the laptop and then causes starting the fans...A solution is to change the processor frequency through the BIOS : I switched to 1.2 GHz. Now, the time before fan starts is increased from 1h !! | OK |
Wireless | | cat /proc/pci gives : Network controller: PCI device 1317:8201 (rev 17). and lspci : 03:00.0 Network controller: Linksys: Unknown device 8201 (rev 11). Linux ID Repository gives :Subsystems for device 1317:8201: [ADMtek] SP906B_V2 Wireless LAN adapter. In fact, this wireless card is admtek chipset based : under windows, this card works fine. Under Linux, the admtek driver provided by admtek does not work, and ndiswrapper-0.5 with ADMTek-win-1.79 with kernel 2.4.23 does not work too... I allready mailed the problem to the ndiswrapper mailing-list | NOT OK |
